Birthday Presents by Stuart Macfarlane

A kaleidoscope of paper,
Tied with ribbons and with bows,
Cover parcels by the dozen,
Sat before me, all in rows.

I will wait till after supper,
Will not open them till ten,
For anticipation is healthy,
I will practice zen till then.

Sat the parcels on my bed,
And squeezed them just a little,
But the contents remain secret,
I hope none of them are brittle.

Turned each over in my hands,
Gosh the wrapping’s really loose,
And the ribbons fall off easy,
At least, that is my excuse.

Wow! My presents are all brilliant,
They’re opened up at last,
So I guess that’s just in time,
To go and eat breakfast.

The Robber Kitten - Nursery Rhyme by Author Unknown

A kitten once to its mother said,
'I'll never more be good;
But I'll go and be a robber fierce,
And live in a dreary wood,
Wood, wood, wood,
And live in a dreary wood.'

So off it went to the dreary wood,
And there it met a cock,
And blew its hat, with a pistol, off,
Which gave it an awful shock!
Shock, shock, shock,
Which gave it an awful shock!

It climbed a tree to rob a nest
Of young and tender owls
But the branch broke off and the kitten fell,
With six tremendous howls!
Hows, hows, howls,
With six tremendous howls!

Soon after that it met a cat;
'Now, give to me your purse;
Or I'll shoot you through, and stab you too,
And kill you, which is worse!
Worse, worse, worse,
And kill you, which is worse.' One day it met a Robber Dog,
And they sat down to drink;
The dog did joke, and laugh and sing
Which made the kitten wink,
Wink, wink, wink!
Which made the kitten wink!

At last they quarrelled; then they fought,
Beneath the greenwood tree;
Till puss was felled with an awful club,
Most terrible to see!
See, see, see,
Most terrible to see!

When puss got up, its eye was shut,
And swelled, and black, and blue;
Moreover, all its bones were sore,
So it began to mew!
Mew, mew, mew,
So it began to mew!

Then up it rose, and scratched its nose,
And went home and said;
'Oh! Mother dear, behold me here,
I'll never more be bad,
Bad, bad, bad,
I'll never more be bad.'

Laughing Time by William Jay Smith

It was laughing time, and the tall Giraffe
Lifted his head, and began to laugh:

Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha!

And the Chimpanzee on the gingko tree
Swung merrily down with a Tee Hee Hee:

Hee! Hee! Hee! Hee!

“It’s certainly not against the law!”
Croaked Justice Crow with a loud guffaw:

Haw! Haw! Haw! Haw!

The dancing Bear who could never say “No”
Waltzed up and down on the tip of his toe:

Ho! Ho! Ho! Ho!

The Donkey daintily took his paw,
And around they went: Hee-Haw! Hee-Haw!

Hee-Haw! Hee-Haw!

The Moon had to smile as it started to climb;
All over the world it was laughing time!

Ho! Ho! Ho! Ho! Hee-Haw! Hee-Haw!
Hee! Hee! Hee! Hee! Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha!

Indian Boyhood by Spike Milligan

What happened to the boy I was?
Why did he run away?
And leave me old and thinking, like
There'd been no yesterday?
What happened then?
Was I that boy?
Who laughed and swam in the bund*
I there no going back?
No recompense?
Is there nothing?
No refund?

There was an Old Man of Moldavia by Edward Lear

There was an Old Man of Moldavia,
Who had the most curious behaviour;
For while be was able,
He slept on a table,
That funny Old Man of Moldavia
